Crochet hook size: 4 mm
UK CROCHET TERMINOLOGY IS USED IN THE WRITING OF THIS PATTERN.
Yarn used in the photo: 7 balls of Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK
Size of the finished blanket approx: 28in x 28in
The exact dimensions of your blanket will be determined by the yarn used and your personal stitch tension as well as the size of your crochet hook. I recommend making a note of the size of your crochet hook at the start, in case you are like me and forget which hook it was you were using, after you put your work down for a day or two. Happened too many times!!!
Any weight of yarn can be used, if you use fingering weight your blanket will naturally be smaller, equally if you use aran weight or heavier your blanket will turn out bigger.
Attention: if you decide to use Rowan Baby Merino Silk, finish 2 -3 inches before your desired length as it expands vertically drastically after blocking. My blanket grew by about 3 inches.
Gauge not required.
Heart Pattern not included but link to pattern provided below.
The entire blanket is crocheted in modified Sedge Stitch, it is a basic crochet stitch cluster consisting of *1dc,2tr* in one stitch, skip two repeat from*. Detailed step by step instruction provided below.
The size of the blanket can be easily modified by simply chaining a multiple of 3 stitches, as long as you have a multiple of 3 stitches you can make this blanket any size you want. The first 2 chains count as your first stitch in every row.
PATTERN:
Chain 132.
Row 1. Skip 2 ch (counts as a dc) work *2 tr into the 3rd chain from hook, skip 2 ch, work
*(1dc, 2tr) into the next chain, skip 2 ch, repeat from * to last 3 chains, 1 dc in the last stitch, turn.
Row 2. Chain 2 (counts as a dc) work 2 tr into the first stitch (the same stitch as the chain 2 comes out of), * skip 2 tr, work 1 dc, 2tr into next dc from previous row.* rep from * to last 3 Sts , miss 2 tr, dcdc into the top of the turning chain, turn.
REPEAT ROW 2 FOR THE PATTERN
About 3 inches into your blanket you can add two stripes of contrasting colour just for two rows, strong pop of colour might work really well and give it some vibrancy.
Border:
On your last row turn your work and crochet
2 x (dc,2tr) into the corner ( and every corner after), continue crocheting (1dc, 2tr ) clusters into every row down the side of your blanket. 2 x (1dc,2tr) in each corner and continue with (1dc, 2tr) clusters across and up the other side.
Be creative and try to add some loving finishing touches like pompons or amigurumi toys (flowers or tiny teddy bears ) or any other embellishments to each corner. I went with hearts, following a free pattern I found online crochetleaf.com. I crocheted two identical hearts for each corner joined them with a surface slipped stitch and filled it gently with some random left over ends and fleece.
I then attached my heard to each corner with a simple cord made with 8 chains and dc in each chain sewing it on each corner.
